Route 66 Road Trip to Santa Fe
September 2025
A 7-day trip exploring the old Route 66 sites coming and going to Santa Fe, NM.
Meteor Crater formed 50,000 years ago when an asteroid plunged through the Earth’s atmosphere and crashed into what would become central Arizona. Because of the crater’s young age and the dry climate Meteor Crater is the best preserved impact crater on Earth. The asteroid was small in astronomical terms just a 150 feet (45.7 m) across. Traveling at around 8 miles per second (12.8 kps) the force of the asteroid impact on the ground was tremendous.
In late afternoon we arrived in Winslow, AZ which is famous for Standin On The Corner Park which commemorates the song "Take It Easy" by the Eagles.
...a flatbed Ford slowin' down to take a look at me."
Day 6 Winslow, AZ to Laughlin, NV
We started the day with a short drive to the Meteor Crater. This stop turned into one of the highlights of our trip with a walking tour at the rim of the crater and a large and interesting museum with interactive displays. Seligman, AZ was our next stop which allowed us a nice break for lunch before continuing to Laughlin, NV.
Westside Lilo's Cafe, nestled along the historic Route 66 in Seligman, Arizona, offers a cozy dining experience. The inviting atmosphere is enhanced by the captivating backstory of Lilo, a spirited woman from Germany, who, alongside her husband Pat, brought their culinary dreams to life. Renowned for the signature carrot cake.
Seligman preserves the Americana of yesteryear at the beginning of the scenic drive that is the longest remaining stretch of Route 66 in the United States. The town was bypassed by Interstate 40 in 1978. In 1987, Seligman became the Birthplace of Historic Route 66 when the State of Arizona acknowledged the stretch of road from Seligman to Kingman as Historic Route 66. The designation regenerated interest in Route 66's old-fashioned Americana, and Seligman remains as the starting point of the longest surviving section of America's iconic road.
The final stop of our trip was the bustling city of Laughlin, NV on the Colorado River. It is known for gaming and water recreation. After driving for hours through the high desert of Northern Arizona, we dipped into the Colorado River Basin where the temperature was almost 110 degrees. Our hotel, the Aquarius, was located on the river.
The storm clouds dropped heavy rain on our final leg home
Day 7 Laughlin, NV to Glendora, CA
We had a hearty breakfast at the Bumbleberry Flats Restaurant before heading home. The weather changed dramatically overnight with temperatures dropping into the 70s and heavy rain following us home.
